Saturday
The first lock.
A half hour later,
approaching Norfolk
On the left I was driving while Rick was making sandwiches. It was easy after awhile but we were in a calm stretch. I was paying attention to the gauge of the depth of the river. Actually I was thinking, "Oh crap! Rick get back up here!"
To the right is along the North Landing River in the Virginia Cut. Very calming, peaceful and God's country.
Friday stop over. Coinjock Marina is a stop over popular with repeat captains travelling on "migrations". It is known for the cheapest gas and it's prime rib. It was a comfortable casual place to walk, chat with locals and hang out. The owner's black lab Riva gives her approval when she puts two pine cones at your feet to play fetch. Lots of other large boats laid over for a rest from the Aberlmarle Sound.
Fri April 28th We left Manteo,NC where we stayed the night in the marina. It is in the Outer Banks north of Hatteras. We had dinner at the Trellis overlooking the boats. Beautiful view even with the rain. It poured rain that night and I slept like a baby, again. The morning start was much better than the previous days. For awhile! We went across Albemarle Sound in a wonderful sunny day's start. Then the choppy windy waves picked up. But compared to the first day out, I was a happy camper! Oh, ask us about the crab pots. Sheesh! Mine fields of them at times. Rick's score was 3. Mine 5. Prop and propeller made it thru. We think.
Thur. April 27 Leaving New Bern N.C. marina. Travelled down the Neuse River and into the Pamlico Sound. We went 4 hours in 3-5 foot waves without seeing land and passed only 2 other boats. Horrendous day of cold, stormy, windy weather. Learned a lesson for future travellers. Do not try to use the bathroom down below when boat is going 20 miles an hour in 5 foot waves. "Everything" gets slammed up, down and out.
Arrived in New Bern,NC Wednesday 4/26. Rick met me at the airport and here we are at the marina. Ready for the next mornings departure. Cheesy smiles and all.
